BLACKVILLE - Services for Ruth Barton Fickling, 92, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, with Committal services in Blackville Cemetery. Mrs. Fickling, widow of Eugene R. Fickling, died November 10, 2001. Born in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Leon S.C. Sr. and Georgia Hadley Barton. Mrs. Fickling received a bachelor of arts degree from Winthrop University and retired as a school teacher after 28 years of service. She was a charter member of Phi and Beta Delta chapters of Delta Kappa Gamma, International Honor Teachers' Society. She was an active member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church and was treasurer for more than 28 years. She was a member of the Blackville Civic Club, the Agricultural Heritage Center, a life member of the Blackville Garden Club, and a board member of Generations Unlimited and the Barnwell County Museum. In 1972, Mrs. Fickling was selected as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America. In 1986, she was selected as Barnwell County's Outstanding Older American, and in 1990, she was selected as Personality of the Month by the Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Fickling was chairman of the Blackville Bicentennial Celebration in 1976, and served in various capacities on the Great Town Program, the June Bug Festival, the Dedication of the Depot, the Blackville Downtown Development Program, and the Heritage Festivals.
Surviving are sons, Eugene B. Fickling Sr. and James G. Fickling; grandsons, Eugene B. Fickling Jr. and Talbert Fickling; great-granddaughter, Turner-Ashby Fickling; sister, Mary Barton Morick of Orange, Calif.
