Patricia A. (Conway) Blackman, of Providence, died Thursday, March 26th at The Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, surrounded by her family. She was 74 years old.

Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Mary (O’Donnell) and Pvt. Edward A. Conway (PFD). She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. Richard W. Blackman; they were married for 52 years.

She was a member of the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island for 40 years, having served as a leader and the public relations coordinator for the 4-Hills Neighborhood for much of that time. She was employed over the years by Brown and Sharpe, Industrial National Bank, Ming International, Plainfield Florist, Amway, Avon and Tupperware. While working with the sales jobs, she spent much of her time educating her daughters, ensuring that before they ever went to school, they could read, write, and perform basic math skills. She was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Delta-Alpha Society, as well as several other groups within the Tabernacle and Mathewson Street United Methodist Churches. She was known as “Clara the Cartoon Clown” in the Blackman Family Clowns, founded by her husband, Rick. She was a staunch supporter of fire, police and military personnel, even walking picket lines with them.

Over the last 13 years, she had been best known as “Grandma Muggle” to the children of the Cranston School Systems, visiting classes and teaching social responsibility as well as adopting RI based Military Units to whom they wrote letters, and held book drives and made holiday tray favors for patients at the VA Hospital in Providence. She created an award that was given to a male and female graduate of the original school where the “Grandma Muggle Club” first began, Chester Barrows Elementary. Teachers kept track of good deeds, good behavior and exceptional acts of kindness performed by students and a girl and boy were chosen at the end of the year to receive the “Muggle Magic Award”. She was recognized by a Veterans’ group with the “Rainbow Award” for her service to Veterans and was also recognized by the US Secretary of Defense for her spearheading of teaching children to appreciate our veterans.

She enjoyed reading, writing, drawing, painting, sewing, and the arts. She was an accomplished clothing maker and costume designer, working on many productions in which her daughters participated over the years. She also had a beautiful singing voice, best known for singing Irish lullabies to her daughters and granddaughters. She encouraged her daughters’ passion for music and theatre.

She leaves behind two daughters, Elaine A. Schindler of Cranston and Erin L. Blackman of Johnston, two granddaughters, Amberlee A. and Michaela M., a great-grandson, Briecen, an “adopted” daughter, Fran L. Paliotta of Johnston, an “adopted” son, Anton R. Edwards, MD, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Agnes A. and Robert Conway, Marie S. (Conway) Barrow and Jean L. (Conway) Frongillo, and her son, Richard W. Blackman, Jr.

Funeral service Tuesday at 11:30am in the Anderson-Winfield funeral home, Smithfield. Burial in Pocasset Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations to the USO, Providence Firefighters’ Burn Foundation or the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation of Rhode Island.
