BASALT - Ross Leon Berg, 80, of Basalt, a former bookkeeper for Idaho Potato Growers and a Bingham County Deputy Sheriff for 15 years, died Dec. 22, 1994, at the home of his son in Virginia.
He was born April 27, 1914, at Basalt, to John H. and Nicolene Clemmensen Berg. He grew up and attended schools in Basalt, and graduated from Firth High School. Following his graduation, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp at Irwin.
On May 18, 1944, he married Helen Gertsch at Chicago. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They lived in Chicago for two years until moving to Basalt. She died Sept. 7, 1993. In his early years he worked as a locomotive engineer and owned a hardware store. He also worked as a bookkeeper for Idaho Potato Growers. He was a dedicated Deputy Sheriff of Bingham County for 15 years. He retired in 1977.
He was an active member of the LDS Church, and served as Bishop of the Basalt Ward and as a officiator in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple, and served a 30-month mission in the German extraction section of the genealogical program of the church.
Survivors include [names deleted]. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, three sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Firth LDS Stake Center at Basalt. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Nalder Mortuary in Shelley, and from 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. Wednesday at the church before services. Burial will be in Basalt Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the Basalt LDS Ward missionary fund.
