Son of Joseph Smyth and Mary E. Scott.

Married Henrietta Polk Waddle on Feburary 14, 1883. They had a daughter Mary Leanna Smyth and a son William "Willie" D. Smyth.

Henrietta died on September 21, 1888 in Arkansas.

Sam remarried Lavonia, they had a daughter Vina Viola and two sons Sam J. and James L.

Sam was a Baptist preacher and sold sewing machines.

After Sam's death the second Mrs Smyth moved to California and is buried there.
