It came as a shock to his friends, to whom he appeared a confirmed bachelor, when, on 29 February 1876, Tyndall married Louisa Charlotte (1845–1940), eldest daughter of Lord Claud Hamilton and Lady Elizabeth Proby of Heathfield Park, Sussex. The ceremony, witnessed by Carlyle, was conducted in Westminster Abbey by the dean, Arthur Stanley. Tyndall was fifty-five and Louisa only thirty and a committed Christian. Despite their failure to have children their marriage was extremely happy.
