She was born in Abernathy, Texas in 1915 and was a member of a large family. Retta graduated from high school in Muleshoe, Texas where she was president of her senior class and a cheerleader for the Muleshoe Mules. She married Sherrod Smith in Colorado City, Texas in 1936. Retta and Sherrod had four children, two of which lived to adulthood, Sherre Anne Parker of Midland, Texas and Katharin Wylie of Mc Kenny, Texas. Retta and her husband were married for over 50 years and resided in Abilene for many years. During their time in Abilene they owned and operated Industrial Motors, Oilfield Transport and Retta's Things for Ladies. Both were active in the First Presbyterian Church, Abilene Woman's Club, and Abilene Country Club where she was President of the Ladies Golf Association and Ladies Golf Association Champion. Retta's interests and hobbies included golf, gardening and church activities, as well as children's activities and sports. She had many friends and acquaintances. Retta was preceded in death by her husband, Sherrod Smith.
She is survived by Sherre and Doyle Parker and their children, Hilary Crawford of Midland and Paige Parker of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Katharin and Don Wylie of McKenny, Texas and their children Sean Wylie, Shanon Wylie, and Sesily Babekuhl of Dallas, Texas
