James R. Douglass One of Promoters of Mt. Scott District.
James R. Douglass, who died at his home, 6714 Forty-fifth avenue, Southeast last Sunday morning, was one of the early promoters of the Mount Scott district when that suburb firs began its rapid growth 20 years ago. He was born in Indiana, March 12, 1852. Coming to Oregon in 1889, he settled near Albany, where he farmed for 25 years.
In 1904 Mr. Douglass moved into the Mount Scott district and built one of the first business houses of the district. For several years he was actively interested in the development of that suburb, where he has lived continuously for 20 years. Mr. Douglass was married to America Williamson October 10, 1871.
Thirteen children were born to them, eight of whom survive. After the death of his first wife, which occurred May 14, 1921. Mr. Douglas married his brother’s widow, Mrs. Nannie Douglass who survives him.
Besides three sons and five daughters, Mr. Douglass leaves 28 grandchildren. He had been an active member of the Christian church from early manhood. The funeral services, which were held Monday afternoon at Downing & Benefiel’s undertaking parlors, were conducted by Revs. J. F. Ghormley and Herbert F. Jones of the Christian church, and Rev. T. E. Elliott of the Methodist church. Music was furnished by the choir of the Kern Park Christian church, of which Mr. Douglass was a member. Interment was in Riverview cemetery.
