James H. Pope, Sr.
(June 28, 1935 - March 29, 2015)

Mr. James Harold Pope, died peacefully at home on March 29, 2015 at his home in Kirkwood, PA at the age of 79, after fighting a long term illness.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, of 49 years marriage, to Doris Ann Pope of Kirkwood, PA and their four children, Patricia Geraldine Wiseman of Hot Springs, VA, Robert O. Williamson of Port Deposit, MD, James Harold Pope, Jr. of Oxford, PA, and Sylvia Dawn Pope of Oxford, PA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and best friend Gracie, his dog.

Jim was born on June 28, 1935 in Creston, North Carolina to Amon Carbon Pope and Rosa Elliot Pope. He had four brothers and two sisters.

He worked at Fisher and Sons Feed Company in Malvern, PA and had many other small jobs up until he retired. When he retired, he became an active member at The Safe Harbor Baptist Church in Cochranville, PA. Jim helped people by participating in the Manna Ministry at his local church which later moved to the New London Baptist Church in West Grove, PA, which was geared toward helping people in need. Jim was also an accomplished maintenance/handyman during retirement and often made repairs at his local church and was always “busy” doing something. He never sat still and was always looking for things to do. He was a generous individual who loved working on things and who was passionate about helping to change the world of everyone that he met. A man of few words, he never took the credit for anything that he did and was always working behind the scenes at the church or in any other project that he was a part of. Jim was known as “Mr. Fix it” and to the children he was known as the “The Candy Man”, as he was always handing out candy to the little ones. He didn’t expect a hand on the back or a badge on his shirt, but his reward was to see that the heart of the broken was mended and that he had put a smile on the face of the people that he met. He also gave freely of himself for all, and often went above and beyond for everyone. When he saw that there was a need, he met the need with just a smile on his face and few words from his lips. He was a father figure to many young people. With his quiet and gentle way and his loving and immeasurable compassion he was loved by everyone that knew him.

Funeral services will be held Saturday 11 am April 4th, at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 86 Pine St. Oxford, PA, where friends and family may visit from 10 – 11am.

Interment will be in Oxford Cemetery.

All are welcome to attend and celebrate James Harold Pope’s life. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice Staff for their outstanding compassion with us during this time, especially Nadine and Ruth.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Manna Ministries, in care of New London Baptist Church, 226 Pennocks Bridge Rd., West Grove, PA 19390.
