Pfc. William A. Gallagher was a member of Col. Evans. F. Carlson's historic Marine Raiders. He was killed in action during the historic World War II Makin Island Raid on August 17, 1942. The raid was the first and only amphibious raid by submarines on a Japanese held island in the Pacific. Pfc. William A. Gallagher and eighteen other Marine Raiders remains were recovered by the Central Identification Laboratory of Hawaii in 1999 on the island of Butaritari (Makin Island). On August 17, 2001 (59 years to the day of their demise) Pfc. William A. Gallagher and 12 other Makin Island Marine Raiders were interred at Arlington Cemetery. The United States Marine Raider Association in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps made this remarkable event become a reality. The remaining 6 Marine Raiders were buried in family plots at the request of their families.
