Thomas William Burt is the son of
Benjamin Burt III 1750-1826
and Joanna Parshall 1754-1850

Young Thomas William Burt enlisted in the War of 1812 in Pennsylvania. Attaining the rank of Sergeant. At the end of the war Thomas relocated and moved to Indiana. Where he soon met a young Martha Munn, whose family had left New York and moved to Ohio. While Martha was visiting relatives in Switzerland, Indiana... she met and fell in love with Thomas.
Martha Munn wed Thomas William Burt in 1828, in Silver Creek, Clark County, Indiana. She and Thomas spent the majority of their married life in or near Washington County, Indiana.

Thomas was first, a farmer, but an able carpenter. Providing a living wage for the ever growing family. Martha and Thomas had 11 children the youngest being born in 1848.

1)Rachel Burt was born in Clark, Indiana in 1829 and passed away on May 9th 1901 in Indiana at age 72.

2) Matilda Burt, Born: Pekin, Washington County, Indiana in early 1832 and passed away on May 5th, 1919 in Bennington, Ottawa County, Kansas at age 87.

3)Thomas P. Burt, Pekin, Washington County, Indiana late 1832 and passed away on September 20th, 1868 in Gosport, Owen County, Indiana at age 36.

4)Malinda Burt, Born: Pekin, Washington County, Indiana in 1834 (a twin)and passed away May 19th, 1919 at age 85.

5)Martha J. Burt, Born: Pekin, Washington County, Indiana in 1834 (a twin) and passed away 16 April, 1917 at age 83.

6)Garbisella Burt, Born: Pekin, Washington County, Indiana in 1835. There is no record for her death.

7)Augustina Burt~Griffin, Born: Salem, Washington County, Indiana on April 3rd,1838 and passed away September 24th, 1875, in Minneapolis, Ottawa County, Kansas at age 37.

8)Mary A. Burt, Born: Scottsburg, Scott County, Indiana in
1844. There no record of her death.

9)Henry Harrison Burt, Born: Scottsburg, Scott County, Indiana on August 6th, 1846 and passed away on May 24th, 1932 in Wilson, Kansas at age 85.

10)Hannah Elizabeth Burt, Born: Utica, Washington County, Indiana in 1847 and passed away March 1st, 1915 in Indiana at age 67.

11)Francis Marion Burt, Born: Washington County, Indiana in 1848 and passed away abt. 1910 in Rockville, Kansas.

We now believe that the parents of Martha have now been found. Much can be read about their connection, especially in the early settlements of our great country.

There have been very few documented records found for 39 year old, Martha Munn~Burt (Birt) or 68 year old, Thomas William Burt SINCE the birth of their last child in 1848 & the 1850 Census. However, between 1849 and 1851 there was another widespread outbreak of Cholera and it is believed Martha and Thomas did not survive the epidemic sometime between late 1850 and 1851. There is a good possibility that 15 year old, Gabrisella Burt, 6 year old, Mary A. Burt and 3 year old, Blanch M. Burt also perished at the same time. During the 1850 US Census the Burt (Birt)family were living in Jackson, Washington County,Indiana when their report was taken on July 26th, 1850 with Thomas, Martha and ten of their children ages,20 years to, two years old being accounted for. Since July, 1850 there has been no confirmed data for Thomas or Martha. After considerable research it has been documented that not only was Cholera presenting itself but to complicate matters, Indiana was hit with an Influenza in epidemic portions at the same time in late 1850 or early 1851.

According to Dr. Walter Daly of the American Clinical And Climatological Assoc., Indianapolis, Indiana, 2008;
"Mass burials were taking place in Jackson, Pekin and many other cemeteries to minimize both highly contagious diseases. With no time to provide a burial vault or even a casket. The bodies were simply wrapped in blankets and placed in mass graves of 2 to ten people per hand dug grave. As cold hearted as all this seems, the marking of the grave was of little importance at that time. It wasn't because no one cared; it was done out of necessity". Some people ran away from their homes thinking they would be safe in another town, not knowing they were carrying the sickness with them. In some small towns the entire population was lost".

We now believe that due to mass burials that no individual headstones were placed. There is just one monument and it's placed in Washington County Cemetery, as it appears on page 1 of this memorial. It was placed in 1982, for all who lost their lives during this dark and sad period in our American history.
The Burt family name did however, survive, and as you have read their names, you can see, most of them lived long lives.

Part of making our loved ones become more real, we need to know as much as we can about their lives, not only how they made a living, but their environment and living conditions.

The first humans that inhabited Indiana isn't known. But 100's of sites used by primitive hunters, fishermen and food gathers have been documented before 1000bc. The first Indians (Miami and Potawatomi tribes)migrated down west side of Lake Michigan in the 17th century. Other villages of Kickapoo and Wea tribes pushed into upper Indiana from northern Illinois. The European immigration began in 1670.
By 1810 the federal census counted 24,520 people. Indiana became a Territory in 1814 and on 11 December, 1816 Indiana became our 19th State. So you can see... from the time that Thomas, born in 1782 and Martha born in 1811, and were married in 1828, had become part of the fabric that provided all of their children, to become among some of the first American citizens born in Indiana.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure when you provide information that it has been vetted properly.
There is more than one Thomas W. Burt. Please, continue your efforts to not assume that just because you want them to be related to you... they may not be and it "muddies the water".

Example: There is a photograph used on many sites that states it's a picture of our Thomas & Martha when in fact it's a photograph of HENRY HARRISON BURT & his wife MARY JANE MITCHELL and taken in the early 1900's. (Henry happens to be the son of our Thomas & Martha).

NOTE: There is also a Thomas W. Burt buried in a Civil War military grave. He's isn't our Thomas. Calculating the year Thomas William Burt was born(1782) and his age during the 1850 US Census, he was already 68 years old. If he had lived to the beginning of the U.S. Civil War he would have been 82 years old. Also there are NO records of military service or benefits for him in the Civil War.

There is an enlistment record for the War of 1812 in Pennsylvania and a Pension Record for that war showing that he applied for his pension while living in Indiana

Our Thomas William Burt has been vetted thoroughly and his direct line has been proven, back to my 6th Great Grandfather, Benjamin Burt Sr. & his wife Sarah Belden and his father my 7th GG David Burt. NOTE: Prior to my acceptance as a Daughter of the French and Indian Wars my ancestral connection to Benjamin Burt Sr. and Sarah Belden of Deerfield Mass. and the Deerfield Massacre was verified and confirmed that Thomas William Burt 1782-1850 is the son of Benjamin Burt III, The Grandson of Benjamin Burt II and Great Grandson of Benjamin Burt Sr..
