Helen Hacking Howell, 75, of Idaho Falls, passed away Friday, September 27, 2002, at EIRC of complications following surgery. She was born July 9, 1927, in Grace, Idaho, the daughter of Leonard Elliott and Edna Belle Harris Hacking. She grew up in southeastern Idaho, attending Firth High School and graduating from Salmon High School in 1945. She attended college in Cedar City, Utah. Helen married Dean Louis Howell on January 7, 1948, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. During their nearly 55 years of marriage, Dean and Helen had been fully committed to each other, their children, grand children, great grandchilden, extended family, and friends.

For many years she operated Helen's Dress Shop, Finer Cleaners, and the Costume Shop in Shelley and Idaho Falls. She was the first woman in Idaho to be elected to serve on a Chamber of Commerce board of directors and served for many years as the secretary of the Shelley Chamber of Commerce. She is listed in "Who's Who in American Women". Helen has always been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served in many capacities, include Young Women's Presedent and Relief Society President. She and her husband recently served as part time missonaries at the Idaho Falls Family History Center.

She is survived by her husband of Idaho Falls; her children, Judy (Tony) Anderson and Kelly (Cindy) Howell of Idaho Falls; 4 grandchildren, Shawn (Jennifer) Anderson and Lori Anderson of El Mirage, Arizona, and Justin Howell and Amy Howell of Idaho Falls; two great granddaughters, Darian Elsner and Jaiden Anderson of El Mirage; Her brother, Richard (Vickie) Hacking of Pleasant View, Utah; her sister, Marilyn (Kirkham) Smith of Sacremento, California; and step sisters, Allene Lyon, Lynada Crezee and Shirley Mecham, all of Firth. She was proceeded in death by one son, Barry Dean Howell; a grandson, Scott Barry Anderson; her parents; and her step father, Herschell Mecham.

Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon, October 2, 2002, in the Idaho Falls Central Stake Center, 2025 Jenny Lee Drive, with Bishop Natan Smith conducting. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm Tuesday, October 1, at Coltran Mortuary 2100 1 street Idaho Falls, and one hour before services at the church. Burial will be at the Basalt Cemetery. Family Tribute
