Born in Harwich in 1815, Joseph C. Ellis moved to Provincetown and married Judith Havender, a local girl.
He began his career at sea as a young man, signing onto whaling ships as a harpooner. He worked on schooners trawling the Grand Banks in a dory for decades. After Joe Ellis retired, he bought a small boat and continued to fish along the shore, knitting and mending his own nets. He died in Provincetown on Feb. 14, 1908, at the grand old age of 93 years.
He is Provincetown's Oldest Fisherman and lived at 283 Commercial Street (Exuma), where he and his wife raised their nine children.
