A German air ace in WWI. He is credited with 43 victories and was awarded the Pour le Merite in 1918. Before the war he worked as a dental assistant, and joined up with the 70th Infantry Regiment in 1914. After being wounded he transferred to the air service where his dental expertise was used, but after training as a pilot it was obvious that he had found his niche. In the last 2 years of the war he had a remarkable run of success, and even when he was shot down in September 1918 he was one of the few WWI pilots to be saved by a parachute. After the war he maintained his interest in flying, which led to his death in an air crash at Copenhagen while he was trying out a new fighter.
