Nellie was born Lummigje Worst on June 24, 1878 in Meppel, Netherlands. She always went by the name of Nellie after the family immigrated to the USA in 1886. She was age eight at the time, now living in West Michigan, mostly Grand Rapids. On April 4, 1897 she married John Barendse, and together with him, she is the mother of eight children. The first names of their children are as follows: Peter, Clarence, Florence, Mary, Albert, Henrietta, Ernie, and Mable. There was also a baby named Mary that died in Grand Rapids at the age of 10 months. In 1906 the family moved from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Lynden, Washington and in 1916 purchased a farm in Brownsmead, Oregon, near Astoria, Oregon. She passed away on March 28, 1927 in Warrenton, Oregon at the age of 48.
