John Barendse was born Jan William Barendse on October 9, 1874 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the son of Peter Barendse and of Hendrika Danner. The family was residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the time, however the mother Henrietta was staying/visiting with her sister in Milwaukee at the time of the birth. He married Nellie Worst on April 4, 1897 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1906 he moved his family to Lynden, Washington and in 1916 purchased a large farm in Brownsmead Oregon, near Astoria, Oregon. His many occupations included being a carpenter, a brick maker, a logger and a farmer. He was the father of eight children. He passed away on July 12, 1944, in Astoria, Oregon at the age of 69.
