Joshua was the 10th of eleven children born to Stephen and Sarah (Hale) Chase.

He married Mary Hadley, daughter of Parratt and Mary (Heath) Hadley, in Newbury, on Nov. 17, 1738. They had eleven children: Benjamin (1765), Betty "Betsy" (1770), Keziah (1772), Polly (1774), Joshua (1776), Jacob (1778), Sarah "Sally" (1781), Phebe (1783), Samuel (1785), Ruth (1787) and Lydia (1789).
