OCEAN PINES -- Rex E. Kershner, 85, of Ocean Pines died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007.

A resident of Ocean Pines for the last 22 years, Mr. Kershner was well known by fellow residents for the hours he spent on the tennis courts, at church, in the community and in and around his meticulously kept home.

Recalled his daughter Karen Frattali, "He was a quiet man with an iron-clad will. Most of his friends knew him as someone extremely determined and able to weather many crises.

"He loved boating and enjoyed water sports, especially the tranquility of fishing," she said.

Added nephew Bob Kershner, "Uncle Rex was a good guy and always available with a quip or sage advice. I admired his energy and stamina and ... he got the most out of life. I will remember him for his vitality, enthusiasm and good nature."

Born May 8, 1922, in Martinsburg, W.Va., to Robert H. and Mildred (McIntyre) Kershner, Mr. Kershner had two siblings, Robert Jr. and Nadine, who preceded him in death.

After graduating from high school in Martinsburg, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, training as an aircraft mechanic.

After the war, he transferred that expertise to the private sector, working first for Martin Marietta Corp. and then Boeing Aircraft Co., from which he retired in 1985.

Mr. Kershner is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean F. Kershner, and their three children, Karen (George) Frattali, of Unionville, Pa.; Rex (Sandy) Kershner, of Atlanta and Constance Kershner of Farmville, Va. He also leaves four grandchildren, Jaycen Kershner, Nicole Kershner, Joshua Frattali and Daniel Frattali; plus one great-grandchild, Madisyn Kershner.

Servi ces in his memory will be held at noon Thursday at the Community Church on Route 589 in Berlin. A meet-and-greet hour begins at 11 a.m. Questions regarding the service may be directed to the church office at 410-641-5433. Private interment will be in the Community Church columbarium.
