July 29, 1921 – July 27, 2018
James Edwin Thiessen, 96, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2018. He was born July 29, 1921, in Hamburg, Iowa.
Jim was blessed with a long and wonderful life, of which he shared 72 years with the love of his life, Ruby Ann Crouse, until her death in May 2017.
He is survived by his two daughters, Tonda Thiessen and Sheila Rae Thiessen Waldie; his two grandchildren Stephanye Ann Simmons and her husband, Toby Simmons; and Keith Alan Waldie and his wife, Sophia Waldie. Jim was blessed to have six great grandchildren as well: Payton Nidever, Mirabella Waldie, Hogan Waldie, Kyle Simmons, Ryan Simmons, and Olivia Simmons.
After high school he joined the Army and was in the 34th Infantry Division, the Fighting Red Bulls, during World War II. He received an honorable discharge as a ranking of corporal. During his tenure in the Army in Italy, he was photographed for Redbook Magazine.
Returning stateside, he reconnected with Ruby and they married in 1945. They lived the first part of their married lives in Hamburg, Iowa. However, after being flooded three times in five years, they sold the farm and moved to Houston, Texas, in 1951. Jim went to work with Stauffer Chemical where he had a long career and retired in 1981. After retirement, he took a part-time job as marshal at El Dorado Golf Club.
Jim and Ruby enjoyed golfing and spent many hours on the golf course. He enjoyed visiting with the golfers and hunting balls, which he would bring home, wash in the dishwasher, sort and place in egg cartons to give to others. He loved being outside. He was either in the garage or working in the yard. He mowed his yard and many times the neighbors' too with his faithful companion Toro.
He always had an infectious smile, a great sense of humor and a quick wit. He kept his sense of humor until the very end. Jim will be missed by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life is set for Thursday, August 2, at 2:00 p.m. at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home. Immediately following, all are invited to attend a reception at the Fellowship Hall at Oaks Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.
