Lt. Kenneth W. Ambrose was killed in November 1942 when his airplane, a P-38E Lightning crashed in the Pasayten Wilderness area within the Okanogan National Forest in Washington State. In 1997, two hikers who were hiking in the Pasayten Wilderness stumbled upon a crumpled P-38 in a ravine on a steep slope. Lt. Ambrose's remains were not found at that time, however, in late 2004, specialists from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, or JPAC found a piece of a femur, a scapula, Ambrose's dog tags, and twisted frames of his glasses. The remains found had to be officially identified and an archeological dig was set for the summer of 2005. In March of 2006, Lt. Ambrose's daughter, Kathleen Edwards was formally notified. Mrs. Edwards was 8 weeks old when her father was killed. Her father was on a maintenance run to California where he was to see his wife and their baby for the first time. Her mother, who re-married was suffering from Parkinson's Disease and unfortunately passed away before her daughter could give her the news that Lt. Ambrose's remains had been found.
There is much more to this story. Many people made the effort and took the time and energy to bring this mystery to a close for the sake of Lt. Ambrose's family.
Lt. Ambrose was given a full miltary funeral at Philadelphia National Cemetery on May 19, 2006. However, his final internment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pa.
