Coroner May Ask Inquest in Road Deaths
Eyewitnesses to Waupaca Accident Being Sought
WAUPACA - A coroner's inquest may be ordered into the deaths of an Ogdensburg couple and a Waupaca man killed Saturday night in a two-car crash, according to Dr. Sam Salan, Waupaca County Coroner. Dr. Salan said he plans to order the inquest after conferring with Sheriff Loran Frazier.
Mr. and Mrs. Burdick, route 1, Ogdensburg, and Leonard J. Robbins, 25, 706 Holbeck St., Waupaca, were killed in a headon collision on Waupaca County Highway E on a curve north of here. Police are trying to locate an eyewitness.
The accident occurred at 5:45 p.m. as Burdick, 69, and his wife, Alice, 70, were returning home from Waupaca where they had been shopping.
Funeral Services Set
Funeral services for the couple will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. from the Holly Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Royalton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Burdick are survived by one son and four grandchildren. Mr. Burdick is survived by two brothers and six sisters, and Mrs. Burdick is survived by one sister.
The couple had lived at their present rural Ogdensburg address for the past year and a half. Immediately following the accident information taken from Burdick's driver license listed their address as High Street in the City of Waupaca.
Six-Month Old Son
Robbins is survived by his wife, a six-month old son, six sisters and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Robbins.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. from the Holly Funeral Home. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today.

In addition, Mr. Burdick is survived by six sisters, Mrs. Jens (Gertrude) Dyhr, Mrs. Rosie Beatty, Mrs. Clara Bowman and Mrs. Adolph (Mary "Inez") Luethy, all of Racine, Mrs. Evelyn Hickman, Topanga, Calif, and Mrs. Emil (Ethel) Therekelsen, Bowling Green, Ohio; two brothers, Clarence D. Burdick, Franksville and Arthur L. Burdick, Racine.
Mrs. Burdick is survived also by a sister, Mrs. Ed (Tressie) Krupp of Waupaca.
Funeral services for both Mr, and Mrs. Burdick will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1:30 p.m., in the HOLLY FUNERAL HOME, Waupaca, Wis. Interment will be in Royalton, Wis. The caskets will remain closed.

Coroner Won't Hold Inquest in Triple Fatality
District Attorney, Police Confer At Waupaca
WAUPACA - There will not be a coroner's inquest to investigate the deaths of a rural Ogdensburg couple and a Waupaca man in a two-car accident here Saturday. The announcement was made by Waupaca Police Chief Fred Rasmussen after he conferred with Dist. Atty. Richard E. Johnson.
The only person criminal charges could be brought against would be Leonard Robbins, 25, who died in the crash, Rasmussen said. The police investigation of the crash determined that the Robbins car went out of control on a curve on County Trunk E, skidded for 238 feet, crossing the centerline and hitting the Russell Burdick car. Burdick, 69, and his 70-year old wife died instantly in the crash.
After investigating all of the rumors, it has been learned that there were no eyewitnesses to the crash.
Activities Investigated
The afternoon activities of both Robbins and the Burdicks were investigated. Robbins had visited several taverns during the afternoon and Mr. and Mrs. Burdick had been shopping in Waupaca, police said. They also stopped at a laundromat before stopping to visit with his sister.
After the crash, Rasmussen said the Burdick car was driven back 36 feet. He estimated the speed of the Robbins car at over 70 miles per hour.
Saturday's tragedy is the second triple highway fatality accident recorded at Waupaca.
