Obituary: Henry Schroeder, 93, of West Bend, died enroute to St. Joseph's Community Hospital.
He was born April 21, 1906, to the late David and Anna Schroeder in the Krasnojar area of Russia near Saratov on the Volga. He was German-Russian by heritage.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Antoinette, who died in 1988, and two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include two children, Henry W. (Mary) Schroeder of Verona and Lois (Tom) Kohls of Sheboygan Falls; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; stepchildren, Warren (Jean) Fritz of Scottsdale, Ariz., Jack (Rita) Fritz of West Bend and Patsy (Robert) Schlicher of Madison, and other relatives and friends.
Henry's father came from Russia to the United States in 1912 with employment arranged with the Kohler Co.
On Oct. 28, 1913 (Julian calendar), his mother with the couple's four children, Anna, Henry, Fred and Sophia, left Europe from Liebau, Russia (now Liepaja, Latvia on the S. S. Kursk owned by the Russian-American Line, which probably sailed for England or Glasgow. The family then boarded the S.S. California (owned by the Anchor Line) for the 12-day ocean trip to Ellis Island, N.Y., and arrived on Nov. 17, 1913.
After the immigration processing, the family went to Brooklyn to travel by train to Port Huron, Mich. and on to Sheboygan, where they joined their husband and father a few days before Thanksgiving of 1913. Henry was then 7 years of age.
Henry grew up in Sheboygan, where he attended Trinity Lutheran, Grant and Horace Man schools, and was confirmed at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church.
On March 10, 1928, he married Esther Julia Kammann. The couple was married 15 years.
Henry farmed in the Kiel and Ada areas prior to moving to Milwaukee and West Bend. His West Bend farm was near Little Cedar Lake.
He retired from the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Co., and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, West Bend.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home, West Bend. Rev. George Mumm will officiate, and burial will follow in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.
Visitation at the funeral home will be Saturday beginning at noon.
