On the morning of February 28, 1958, the Floyd County school bus John Alex DeRossett was driving crashed into a truck on US Highway 23 and then plunged into the Big Sandy River. Of the 48 children on board, 22 were able to escape; the other 26, plus John, drowned in 30 feet of water. His body was found on March 2, after the bus crash, still inside the bus.
This event received nation-wide publicity and the National Safety Council called it "the worst school bus accident in US history."
