Carolyn Estelle (Burgin) Strickland, 78, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away at Vita's Hospice on March 21, 2015. She was born January 9, 1937 in Slater, Missouri, the second of three children, to the union of Vernon Leon Burgin Sr. and Betty Belle (Addison) Burgin. She was preceded in death by bother parents and a brother, Vernon Leon Burgin, Jr. Carolyn attended the Kansas City Missouri public schools, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1955. She went on to attend Kansas City Junior College majoring in Business Administration. Carolyn accepted Christ at an early age uniting with Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church, later uniting with Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, KCMO and finally with Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E. Church, KCMO. Carolyn was united in marriage to Edward L. Harris and to this union two children were born, Robin and Rodney. Carolyn was employed at Danny Dare Clothing and later went on to work for the United States Postal Service, where she worked over thirty years until retiring in 1997. While working at USPS she met and later married Lloyd G. Strickland, who preceded her in death. This union brought forth four children to her family: Denise, Saundra, Michael and Marc. Carolyn was very active in her church and devoted her life to serve as best she could. She held many positions in the church, serving as a choir member, trustee and stewardess as well as on the Women's Missionary Society, local and conference Lay Organization and Finance Committee. She held her position at Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E. Church as church treasurer for many years, even until the time of her passing. She loved her church and the Christ Our Redeemer church family. Carolyn was also very active in several organizations such as NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees), G.G. Girls and the Lincoln High School Class of '55 Alumni Organization. Carolyn loved family and it was especially proud of all of her grandchildren. She loved traveling, reading, bowling, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, watching the Kansas City Chiefs and chatting with friends on the phone. She leaves to cherish her memory; three sons, Michael Strickland of Hayward, CA, Marc Strickland of the city and Rodney Harris, Sr. (Hazel) of Olathe, KS; three daughters, Denise Hall of Hayward, KS, Saundra Wells and Robin Winfrey (Vernon) both of the city; one sister, Sandra B. Lucas of the city; eighteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins; the Gray, Mann, Moore and Winfrey families; her Christ Our Redeemer church family; and many special friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 28, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors.
