"EDMUND OTIS DEWEY, of Owosso, came by inherited right into the newspaper business and into Republican politics. He was the son of George M. Dewey, a sketch of whom follows this, and of Emma Bingham Dewey, and was born at Niles, Michigan. Angust 24th, 1861. He received a common school education, supplemented by a course at the Hastings High school. Before graduation he learned the printer's trade in his father's office and in November, 1881, he became Local Editor of the Owosso Times, which has been his business home ever since. He leased the plant in 1887, purchased a half interest in 1890, purchased the balance in 1892, and has conducted the business on his own account ever since. When asked about his war record Mr. Dewey said it consisted in "Gunning for delinquent subscribers." If he has had as good success in that as he has in politics he ought to be getting rich. His first vote was cast for D. H. Jerome for Governor in 1882, and he has never swerved from the Republican faith since. He has been a delegate to nearly every Republican State Convention since 1886. He was School Inspector in Owosso city, 1883-86; City Clerk, 1886 and 1887; Supervisor-at-Large, 1887-88; Deputy Oil Inspector, Twelfth district, 1893-97 and was appointed Postmaster at Owosso April 15th, 1900. He is Secretary and Treasurer of the Owosso Telephone Company: stockholder in the Owosso Savings Bank. Of fraternal societies he is a [p.142] member of the Knights of Pythias, Maccabees, Modern Woodmen. A. O. U. W., and Loyal Guards. He has long been active in the State Press Association and the Michigan Republican Newspaper Association and has held official positions in both. He was married in Owosso September 21st, 1887, to May C. Williams, daughter of Hon. A. L. Williams, the first settler and founder of that place. He has a daughter, Harriet Emma Dewey, and has had two sons, who died in infancy."
