Born in Steep Falls, Cumberland, ME. Worked in a foundry in Saco, Maine in 1860, living with two of his brothers. (His father had died between 1850 and 1860). Enlisted as a Private in the Civil War, Co. C, 5th Maine Infantry for three years (1861-64). His unit fought in many key battles.

After the War, by 1867, he came to Northern California to settle—mostly in Amador and Sacramento Co. He was a merchant, running general stores primarily. He married Mary Caroline Gombert in 1879 in Fiddletown, Amador, CA (then called Oleta).

William died at the old soldiers' home in Yountville. Survived by his wife and son George Henry Atkinson.

Brother of George Atkinson (FAG #54204734) and Charles Atkinson (FAG #54204693), both worked as teamsters. All three were long time residents of California--pre 1870.
