Although her names were registered as Ethelena Viola at birth, she was always known as Ethel. Her father James Rosecrans Appleton died in a barn fire in January 1897 and her mother Eliza Catherine Witherspoon died of pleurisy and phthisis (tuberculosis) in December 1897. Ethel and her brothers Clarence and Almonte were cared for by their aunts Abigial and Mary and uncle Willmot (all of whom were unmarried) on the Appleton family farm. Ethel's brother George was sent to live with the Witherspoon family.

Ethel married Robert Samuel "Bob" Steckley on 18 February, 1920 at Elm Farm. A description of their wedding was published in the Aurora Banner on 20 February 1920, p. 5, col. 1, in which Ethel's uncle was incorrectly referred to as Wm. Steckley. After their marriage they lived with Bob's parents at Locust Lodge Farm in King Township, where he helped to manage the farm. Ethel and Bob had only one child, Robert "Ivan" Steckley.

She died on 7 January 1924 at Locust Lodge Farm of influenza, with complications of appendicitis and pneumonia. A brief obituary was published in the Aurora Banner on 11 January 1924, p. 5, col. 1.
