Alanson Malcolm "Lance" Fitchett Jr. was born March 24, 1927 to Alanson M. and Mary L. Fitchett.

He married Darleen Boyd, and the couple had two daughters and a son. Shortly after Darleen's Jan. 19, 1960 murder in the couple's Des Moines home, Lance moved his girlfriend, Colleen Seiberling and her children into the home. Five months after Darleen's murder, Lance and Colleen moved to California, but Colleen returned to Iowa with her children after about a year when Lance allegedly tried to poison her.

Lance married Lavonne Marie (Cary) Scott on May 28, 1963 in Los Angeles. Lavonne died March 16, 1999, just days after receiving in the mail a copy of an FBI report with statements from one of Fitchett's daughters that detailed what happened the night her father locked her in her bedroom shortly before her mother was murdered.

Lance Fitchett died without ever being charged for murder or attempted murder.
