Marilynn Myers Haselhorst grew up on a farm during the Depression, earned a college degree, had a long career as a teacher, and was a lifelong resident of Missouri. She married, raised a family, and was an avid gardener.
The only child of Corinne and C. Ross Myers, Marilynn was born March 23, 1928, in Brunswick. She died March 25, 2015, at the age of 87, in Jefferson City after enduring failing health the past month.
As a child in Brunswick, she grew up on her parents' farm, being chased as a toddler by a pet rooster named "OldTimer," and later raising and shearing sheep to fund her college education. Marilynn graduated from Brunswick High School in 1946.
She went on to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Education Degree. The commencement speaker at her graduation ceremony in 1950, under pouring rain, was the President of the United States, Harry S. Truman.
It was at a Newman Center college dance where Marilynn met her future husband, A.A. (Gus) Haselhorst, of Folk. They wed in 1950 and moved to Jefferson City in 1954, where they lived the rest of their lives. They raised four children and were married nearly 51 years, until Gus' death in 2001.
Early in her career, Marilynn taught kindergarten in Columbia, then worked as a substitute teacher in Jefferson City Public Schools while her own children were young. Later, she taught at schools in Frankenstein and St. Martins, before switching to help inmates in the Missouri Department of Corrections earn their GEDs. She was a 60-year member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with friends and visiting her grandchildren. Passionate about gardening, Marilynn was a Master Gardener for almost 20 years, specializing in day lilies and iris. She was also instrumental with the organizational aspects of the Central Missouri Master Gardeners' annual plant sale.
Surviving are son Ross Haselhorst and daughter-in-law Sheri of Rolla; daughter Cheryl Haselhorst and son-in-law Jim Wambold of Phoenix, Arizona, and granddaughters Brynne Wambold, Nyla Wambold and Tegan Wambold; daughter Kay Wilson and son-in-law Wendell of Marietta, Georgia, granddaughter Leslie Houston and husband Billy, and great-grandchildren, Adalyn Thomas, Kendyll Houston and Brooklyn Houston, granddaughter Holly Hoey and husband Adam, and grandson Kyle Wilson and wife Julie; and daughter, Lori Haselhorst.
In keeping with Marilynn's lifelong desire to teach, she requested her body be donated to the University of Missouri in hopes of expanding the understanding of the disease of scleroderma.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Hospice Compassus.
