Richmond was the son of Charles Ballew (1791-1870) and Poly VanMeter (1791-1843).

The Daily Register, Portage, Columbia County, Wisconsin, Monday, July 6, 1896:

"Died Suddenly

While here on a visit, R. A. Ballew, father of Mrs. W. B. Stoddard died at her home in this city Friday evening of paralysis of the heart. Mr. Ballew had been in excellent health up to within a few minutes of his death and his sudden decease was a great shock to the family. Mr. Ballew was born in Kentucky September 26, 1828 and came to this state when 16 years of age and at one time was a celebrated pilot on the Wisconsin river. He began his river life as a raftsman and knew Portage in the early days when lumber was shipped here on the river.
His wife, who died last February, was Miss Elizabeth Henderson of Prairie du Sac. Eight children, five daughters and three sons - were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ballew, the sons and one daughter - Mrs. W. B. Stoddard, survive.
For a number of years preceding Mrs. Ballew's death, they resided at Fisher, Ill. and it was to this place the remains were taken for burial last night. Mr. and Mrs. Stoddard accompanying the body to its last resting place beside the wife and mother."
