Mrs. Sara Walker Spencer, 92, of Charlotte, North Carolina and formerly of Monroe, North Carolina died Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, North Carolina. Born October 19, 1922 in Columbia, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Oliver Walker. Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, James Hamilton Spencer. Also preceding her in death were her sister Louise Walker Landrum, and her brothers Lowery Holt Walker, Sidney Oliver Walker, Harvey Thomas Walker, and Henry O'Bannon Walker. She is survived by her two sons, James Hamilton Spencer, Jr. and his wife Patricia Varnell Spencer of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dr. Sidney Walker Spencer and his wife Michelle Jones Spencer of Mount Airy, North Carolina. Affectionately known as Mammy, Mrs. Spencer is also survived by her four grandchildren, Hank and Katie Spencer, Holt and Aidan Hanlon, Kathryn Spencer, and Sid Spencer, Jr., and four great grandchildren, Alexondra, Vaughn and Jackson Spencer and Anderson Spencer. Mrs. Spencer was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Monroe, North Carolina. A graduate of UNC-Greensboro, Mrs. Spencer received a degree in business. She enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was an avid sports fan. An enthusiastic bridge player and gardener, Mrs. Spencer was also a gifted decorator, antique collector, and voracious reader. Funeral services will be conducted by Father Brad Smith on Saturday, March 28 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Monroe, North Carolina at 1 p.m. After the service, the family will receive friends in the Parrish Hall. On Thursday, March 26, a reception to honor Mrs. Spencer will be held at The Cypress of Charlotte from 11-12. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, North Carolina 27017, where Mrs. Spencer received such loving and compassionate care. The family would also like to express their appreciation to Golden Living Center in Mount Airy, North Carolina for the recent exceptional care given to their mother. Lastly, the family wishes to recognize The Cypress of Charlotte and staff, and The Steward Health Center for their outstanding care and love Mrs. Spencer enjoyed while a resident for the last 14 years.
