Juliet Graff Miller, a life-long New Orleanean, passed away on December 7, 2008, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was 87. Julie is survived by two sons, Bruce Miller of Metairie, his wife Dr. Jane Miller and their sons Hal and Andrew, and Marc Miller of Phoenix, his wife Denice and their daughters Catherine and Audrey; a brother, Sidney Graff of Phoenix; a sister Ann Bedau of Ojai, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Julie is preceded in death by her parents, Max Graff and Ester Lillian Korn Graff; a sister, Margaret Kahn; and her former husband, Harold Miller.
Julie reveled in life and never passed up an opportunity to take advantage of all the city had to offer. A 1938 graduate of Sophie B. Wright High School and the drummer in its band, she also acted in school plays and danced ballet. Music and dance remained her passions, and for years she was a member of Theresa Torkanowsky's flemenco studio. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing, often dancing with Arthur Murray teachers. Julie was also active in Parents Without Partners and later with B'nai B'rith. She worked as a legal secretary for Standard Fruit and Steamship Company and later for Starr Broadcasting Company before retiring to travel the globe. There wasn't a trip that she would pass up, and with her sons and their families as well as alone, she traveled to both close and distant locales. She visited her son Marc's home in Arizona for extended periods of time, and she likewise visited her sister in Ojai. Although she enjoyed her travels, which included Israel, Egypt, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, and when her son Marc was in the Navy, Hawaii. Her favorite place was here in New Orleans. A Hurricane Katrina evacuee, Julie spent a year with her son Marc and daughter-in-law Denice in Arizona before returning to her home in New Orleans.
Julie was an accomplished actress, singer and dancer, and although she did not grace the legitimate stage, she acted in musicals presented by Temple Sinai and later Congregation Gates of Prayer. She was the "life of the party", always with a cheerful disposition and smile, and an encouraging word for her fellow thespians. Early in her marriage, she had the opportunity to be a clown for a day with the Shrine Circus. Photos taken of her in her clown costume and make up show that she was having the time of her life, and her enjoyment of life is how she will be remembered.
Although Julie was the daughter of a modest pharmacist and grew up in the Depression when girls did not routinely attend college, Julie continued her education at Tulane's University College, excelling in all her subjects. That education, a keen intellect and genuine fondness for people, even complete strangers, made her a kind and loving person. Her delight in life first were her children, Bruce, a local attorney and Marc, an airline pilot. Later, she reveled in her four grandchildren, Hal, Catherine, Andrew and Audrey, who truly became the light of her life, and upon whom she stowed her loving kindness, wisdom and guidance.
Other than her children and grandchildren, her lasting legacy is her poetry. A lifelong poet, her sons have amassed volumes of her poetry for her posterity. Not a Shakespeare or a Longfellow, Julie was constantly writing poems, sometimes on the back of envelopes. To others, these may be interesting rhymes but she always involved her family in her poetry. She leaves a special gift to all her friends and family she left behind. Julie was a member of Congregation Gates of Prayer.
Funeral services will be held at Hebrew Rest Cemetery at 2100 Pelopidas Street in Gentilly on December 9 at 3 o'clock p.m. Rabbi Robert H. Lowey presiding. Kindly omit flowers; donations to Jewish Children's Regional Service, Congregation Gates of Prayer or Canon Hospice are preferred. A minyan will be held at the home of Bruce and Jane Miller Tuesday evening at 6:45p.m. Arrangements by L.A. Muhleisen and Son.
