Mr. Japhus James Evans, Sr., 82, of Jackson passed from this life on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery V.A. Medical Center.

Visitation will be 5:00-8:00pm, Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, March 26, 2015 in the funeral home chapel with interment in Lakewood South Cemetery.

He was born Wednesday, January 11, 1933 in Morton, Mississippi, a son of the late Lewis Tillman Evans and Ima Vermell Gaddis Evans. He graduated from Morton High School where he played football and received a college scholarship.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Evans honorably served our country from May 1953 until April 1955, including a tour of duty in Korea. Following his discharge, the very next day he was introduced to Frances Kersh on a blind date. They married in 1956.

Mr. Evans was a integral part of the business community in South Jackson for many years. As owner and operator of the Lion Service Station and Evans Repair and Welding, he served the needs of many friends and customers.

He was a member and long-time officer for the American Legion Post No. 112 in Jackson, and a member of Leavell Wood Masonic Lodge No. 620 and Byram Baptist Church. His hobbies included deer hunting and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark Wayne Evans, and granddaughter, Amy Danielle Evans.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Frances Jean Kersh Evans; son, Japhus James "Jay" Evans, Jr.; grandsons, Justin Powers and Bryan Powers; great-granddaughter, Katelyn Marie Powers; and "honorary son", Clayton Morris and wife Susan and family.

Memorials may be made to the Community Living Center at the V.A. Medical Center, 1500 E Woodrow Wilson, Jackson, MS 39216.
