Joan worked for the City of Bloomington for many years in the Human Resources Department under Mayors Frank McCloskey and Tomi Allison. She was given the Key to the City when she retired. She was a 4-H leader in Monroe County, a member at-large of the ABWA, a member of the Spencer VFW, the Moose Lodge in Bloomington, and had been a member of the Spencer American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Joan was a member of the Ellettsville Church of Christ.
Joan is survived by one son, Jon (Julie) Smith, of Bloomington; and a daughter, Susan Anderson of Spencer; daughter-in-law, Debbie Smith of Ellettsville; brother, Don (Pat) Arthur of Stinesville. She had 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She also had several nieces and Nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Jeffrey Smith; one sister, Imogene Abbitt; and a great-granddaughter.
There will be a pitch-in dinner and a Celebration of life on Friday, March 27 th at 1 p.m. at the Stinesville Lions Club, 8060 North Stinesville Road. There will be a private family burial at a later date at Methodist cemetery in Ellettsville.
Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, or the Spencer American Legion Post #285 Ladies Auxiliary.
