Son of Luther Laflin & Almira Sylvester Laflin of Massachusetts. He married Anna Weaver Staats, daughter of Isaac Staats of Albany, New York. From this union was born Addison H. Laflin, Sylvester Hall Laflin, Jane Laflin who married Francis Milton Weaver, and five others.

The story of the Laflin, Rand Power Company empire is lengthy & complex. Its genesis in the production of saltpeter at a Southwick, Mass. powder mill. This mill was established & expertly operated by Sylvester Laflin's father, Luther, and several of his uncles. The giant company was known throughout the world, holding millions of dollars in capital. It supplied the Russian armies of Alexander II & his son, Alexander III.

Sylvester Laflin arrived in St. Louis in 1842 with the intent to supply the American West. This his did well, manufacturing gun powder, & dealing in safety fuse, shot,bar lead, caps, & sundry other items. He was a director of the Old Bank of the State of Missouri, and of the Old Lindell Hotel. Then director of the Pilot Knob Iron Co., the St. Louis Iron Mountain Co., and the St. Louis & Southeastern Railway.
