Tom was the son of Henry Thomas Elwood Thompson (a native of Ohio) and Emma Virginia Spraggins (born in Arkansas). His parents had married on the 23rd of Nov, 1908 in Hot Springs, Garland, Arkansas. Tom was born to the couple 13 months later. There are no records to date re Tom's Dad other than the marriage record, which can be found on Ancestry. After that, there seems to be no trace of him. Young Tom and his mother are found in the 1910 Census, living with Emma's parents in Hot Spring, Arkansas.

Tom's mother remarried in 1912 to Harry Salisbury, a farmer in Hot Spring, Arkansas.

The next we know of Tom is in 1930, in Joplin, Missouri where he is living with his step-grandparents. Tom was working there as a lead smelter.

In August of 1939, Tom married Stella Mae (Walters) VanNoy, who had a young son by her previous marriage. Tom's boyhood history was to repeat itself now. Tom became the man of the house that was needed by Stella and young Jimmy, who continued to live in Joplin, with Tom working as a foundry man. Tom was a good father to Jim, and the two of them often went fishing and hunting together.

Just a few years later, Tom became ill with pulmonary tuberculosis and was required to enter the local TB Sanitorium in Webb City, Mineral Township, Jasper County, Missouri for care for the remaining few years of his life. He was to receive many visits from his devoted wife and stepson until his death in early 1946.
