Mary E. Pierce, was the only daughter of Jarvis Pierce and Elewisa Hubbard. Born in Harrisburg, Gallatin County, Illinois in 1848, she married Zephaniah Phillips, son of George W. Phillips, in 1862 in Harrisburg, while Zephaniah was serving in the Civil War. Four children were born: Anna C. in 1866, Zephaniah Jr. in 1868, Julia J. in 1870, Clarence E. in 1875, and Ida May, who was born and died in 1880. The family moved to Florida in 1882, settling on the barrier island of Long Key, adjacent to St. Petersburg, where Zephaniah built the first house. Mary died in 1929 in St. Petersburg and was buried in the same plot as her husband even though her name is not on the headstone.
