James was the son of Michael Ford & Agnes Lake. Although James' marriage license shows that he was born at Brantford, Ontario, Find A Grave contributor Diane Calhoun reports that James was born at Blandford (Blandford-Blenheim).

He married Lydia A. Ziegler on 15 Aug 1877 at Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

James' obituary in the Spokane Chronicle includes: "He is survived by his widow, Lydia Ford; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Bigelow of Seattle and Miss Mabel Ford of Spokane; and by five sons, James, Spokane; Frank, Spokane, broker; John, with the Water Power company in Spokane; Elmer, rancher of Coulee, and Hugh Ford of Eugene, Ore." The obituary refers to him as a mining broker with an office in the Rookery building, and mentions that his son James was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce.
