Howard Matthew Kerr, 93, well known Towanda business man, passed away on March 19 in his home surrounded by family. He was the husband of the late Ann Barrett Kerr who died on June 30, 2012.

Howard was born on Sept. 24, 1921 on a farm in Damascus Township, Wayne County, Pa., the sixth child of the late James Coger Kerr Jr. and Mary Seibert Kerr.

Howard married Ann Barrett, the love of his life, on Sept. 14, 1946 in Ss. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church in Towanda. They were blessed to have been able to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary in September 2011.

He was a graduate of St. Basil's High School in Dushore, Sullivan County, Class of 1940. Howard grew up in Sullivan County where he developed lifelong friendships with Bill Sick and Bob Lambert. He enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. Howard was wounded in action and was awarded two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. He was a proud Marine, member of the Towanda American Legion where he was a past Commander and member of the Honor Guard. He was also a member of the World War II Last Man's Club.

Howard was actively involved in his community helping in the formation of the Towanda Ambulance Association, Towanda Civil Air Patrol and Civil Defense. He is a past member of the Towanda Borough Council, Towanda Elks, Towanda Lions, Towanda Country Club and Knights of Columbus.

Howard started his career as an insurance agent working for Nationwide and then Aetna. He then became a real estate broker and appraiser.

Howard was devoted to his church and worked faithfully to help build the current St. Agnes School and worked diligently to ensure its success. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a Hospice and Salvation Army volunteer and tirelessly worked to visit and comfort those around him. He was well known for the sugar cookies that he made for family, friends, and the shut-ins he visited. He was truly an inspiration to us all.

Howard is survived by seven children; Four daughter and three sons. six grandchildren & three great-grandchildren.

He is also survived one sister and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Ann, he was pre-deceased by three brothers James C. Kerr, George Kerr, Leo Kerr and a sister Jeanette Cote.

Family and friends will be received between the hours of 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, March 23 at the Maryott Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Third Street, Towanda. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the church. Interment will be at a later date in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, North Towanda, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Agnes School, 102 Third St., Towanda, PA 18848 or to the charity of one's choice in Howard's memory. Memories and condolences may be expressed by visiting www.bowenfuneralhomes.com.
