Josephine Gustava Halseth was born in 1856 in Vestre Aker, Norway to Peder Erickson Halseth and Marthe Kathrine Johnsdatter Bjorge. She was the 5th of eight children. Josephine was the last member of her family to come to America in 1874. Her mother died in 1872 and her father and sisters immigrated in 1873 while Josephine stayed behind to work and help pay for their passage. Josephine worked in a Hemp factory where she lost and eye due to an accident and had a glass eye thereafter.

Five years after she arrived in Utah, she married John Anderson who had also immigrated from Norway. John Anderson was a friend of her brother, Antone and the two young men had been shipmates in 1868 when they came to America. John and Josephine Anderson lived in Mt. Pleasant, (little Scandinavia)Utah for the first several years of their marriage. Their first two little boys were born and died in infancy. They had a total of seven children, the last son born in 1898. Only three of their seven children survived to adulthood.

John Anderson was a cable and rope maker, learning the trade in the shipping industry in Norway. He was able to use this skill to make ropes and cables for the mining operations around the state of Utah. The family moved to Park City, Utah in 1884. John and Josephine lived in a small miner's house in Swede Alley for most of those years. Their only daughter died of heart disease in 1904 when she was 18 years old. Their three remaining sons attended school in Park City. John worked in the mining industry in Park City for almost 30 years. In 1920, John died of pneumonia at the age of 69. Josephine lived for another 15 years. Josephine lived with her youngest son, Lafe, and his family for those fifteen years and died at his home in Park City in 1935. Both Josephine and John are buried in Mt. Pleasant with their four children who died young.
