Professor Nutting taught zoology at the University of Iowa for over forty years and served as curator of the UI Museum of Natural History. He authored numerous scholarly works on marine hydroids. Two species of birds, Nutting's flycatcher (Myiarchus nuttingi) and the Nicaraguan seed-finch (Oryzoborus nuttingi), were named in his honor.
