Mattie Jane Purvis Calhoun was a North Carolina native and daughter of Council Purvis. She married James W "Bud" Calhoun on July 10, 1890 and they lived in Kibbee Georgia. After her husband's death Mattie lived in Savannah and Telfair County Ga. She was the mother of sons, Fredrick J. Calhoun, Rufus B. Calhoun Lucian H. Calhoun Horace G. Calhoun and Samuel D. Calhoun ; and daughters Miss Nonnie Dell Calhoun ; Mrs. Myrtle M. Griffin ; Mrs. Carrie Griffin, and Mrs. Bonnie Kamalakis.
