Robert Borchers Gerdes was the son of Anton John George Gerdes and his wife, Gladys Viola Gerdes, nee Borchers. He married Ruth Maybelle Ashbaugh on September 15, 1945 in Minneapolis, MN. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II primarily in North Africa. He attained the rank of Technical Sgt. (E-7). He was awarded the Purple Heart. Robert and Ruth had two children, a son and a daughter. Ruth passed away on February 15, 1964. On August 20, 1966, Robert married Joan Pilson, nee DesMarais. They remained married until his death.
