David was born to John and Delilah Upton of Cross Creek, Cumberland Co., NC. (Cross Creek became Fayetteville in 1783) Her maiden name is not known. This history is partially taken from Upton Family Records by William Henry Upton (1893) and my personal research. His boyhood was spent in NC and thence removed to Knox County, TN where he married Peggy Carmichael on 4 Dec. 1804 as shown on Page 6 of the marriage license record in Knox County. In Jan. 1814 they lived in Smith Co., TN where David enters the West TN Militia as a Private in Copeland's 3rd Reg. @ Carthage. On May 10, 1814 he musters out. In 1818 they are in White Co., IL living close to the Francis Miller family and widow Nancy Miller Lee. On Mar. 11, 1823 David's daughter Jane marries Archibald Lee in Hamilton Co., IL. In 1830 David's family is living next door to Archibald and Jane with 3 daughters at home. On April 13, 1837 David purchases 40A in Renault Twp. in Monroe Co. IL. In 1844 He sells his property to John Upton. In May, 1846 Peggy dies and in Aug. 1846, David dies. David left no Will and on Oct. 15, 1846 Letters of Administration were issued to the administrator and on May 22, 1847, his estate was settled. It is not known where either David or Peggy were buried.
