Lee Edward Mason, 89 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015 at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain, following a brief illness.
He was born April 25, 1925, in Anchor, KY and lived in Amherst since 1954. Ed worked as a machinist and railroad car repairman at Cleveland Quarries Company for 36 years, retiring in 1990.
Beginning in 1943, Ed worked in the production of the Atom Bomb at The Clinton Engineering Works in Oak Ridge, TN, that ended WWII. He received a certificate and Army-Navy "E" Award from the Secretary of War, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and the President of the United States, Harry S. Truman. He enjoyed watching baseball, traveling, hunting, fishing, reading the Bible, and attending church. He was a member of Free Pentecostal Church of God in South Amherst for 45 years with the former pastor Rev. Opal Fields, Jr.
Ed will be missed by his loving wife of 59- 1/2 years, Irene Mason (nee: Fuson); his daughter Sandra Payne of Sandusky, grandchildren Jared (Leslie), Jordan, and Carissa Payne of Norwalk, great grandchildren Seth and Payge; many dearly beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Phillip Steve and Drusilla Mason; his two sisters Mary Waltz, Vestina Jones and three brothers, J.T., Ira, and Virgil Mason.
Friends may call Sunday, March 22, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Church of God of Prophecy; 11233 Lagrange Road, Elyria. The Rev. Dan Clouse of North Fairfield House of Prayer, will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
