John Alan Pumphrey, born May 27, 1966 departed this world March 19, 2015 to begin a new life in his heavenly home at the age of 48.

John is survived by his father, John W. Pumphrey; mother, Carolyn Pumphrey; sister, Janet Hand & husband, Tommy Hand; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

As a young boy, John spent many summers visiting his Grandma Pumphrey. John loved planting and working in the garden with her. He watched her cook and roll out pie dough. John loved being in the kitchen with her and she loved teaching him how to cook. This created a great desire for him to become a chef.

After graduating high school (Moore, Oklahoma) he attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. When he returned home, he was the chef at Legend’s Restaurant in Norman for many years. Later, Johnny decided to travel and had many adventures as a chef.

John was the chef on a luxury train, “The American Orient Express.” He loved his job. He saw a lot of beautiful country and met people from all over the world. John loved visiting with them. He would laugh and say they were mostly “blue hairs,” BUT that was the age group that Johnny dearly loved. The passengers were spoiled and he loved to spoil them.

John worked various jobs as a chef and a sous chef. He worked in Mackinac Island, Michigan, Oregon, California and Hawaii. One of his biggest adventures was when he worked a government job in Antarctica, cooking for the military and scientists.

John loved his family and friends – he never forgot a face. He loved watching and talking OU football. John had a big heart and loved helping people.

He will be missed daily by all that loved him.

Funeral Services to celebrate John’s life will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Wilmont Place Baptist Church, located at 6440 S. Santa Fe, in Oklahoma City. Interment will be at 3:00 P.M., at the Oakwood Cemetery, in Wewoka, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home, Moore, Oklahoma.
