Attorney, Businessman and Politician. He graduated from Union College in 1830, attended the Litchfield Law School, was admitted to the bar, and began a practice in New York City. He became an early expert in the developing field of corporate law, and represented the railroad interests of Cornelius Vanderbilt. A Democrat, he was active in the Tammany Hall organization and was Chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee from 1853 to 1856. From 1857 to 1861 he was Collector of the Port of New York. In 1870 he became Grand Sachem of Tammany Hall, and served until 1876. From 1872 to 1876 he was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. In 1878 he was the unsuccessful Tammany candidate for Mayor of New York City. He died after suffering from complications of Bright's Disease.
