Robert S. Newkirk, age 65, of Lower Alloways Creek passed away Monday, March 16th at his home.
Born in Salem he was the son of the late Clifford and Anna Leonard Newkirk.
Robert served our country in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War (1969-1973).
He was employed by EI DuPont as a fireman until his retirement in 2005. Robert was a 1968 graduate of Salem High School and attended the Canton Baptist Church.
He was a member of the Elsinboro Fire Company which he nicknamed, Hooterville and served as chief their for many years. In addition, he was an EMT instructor and a member of the HAZMAT team.
Robert loved music, especially the oldies and followed the Eagles, Phillies, Notre Dame and NASCAR teams, especially Jeff Gordan. He enjoyed going to all of his grandchildren's ballgames and was known as the "Gatorade Getter" and the "Wawa Runner."
Robert is survived by his wife, Ruth Newkirk; his daughter, Carrie Watson (Chris) of Pennsville; Carrie's mother, Patty Green of Elsinboro ;step daughters, Tammy Donaldson (Harry) of LAC and Ann Wheaton (Gary) of Quinton; grandchildren, Evan, Gabriel and Avery Watson; step grandchildren, Victoria and Isabella Wheaton and Garrett Donaldson; step father, Max Jenkins (Lorraine) of Pennsville; and several family members from Mississippi. He is predeceased by his grandparents, Robert and Anna Taylor; and brother, Joseph Jenkins.
Services will be held in WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 613 Salem Quinton Rd., Rt. 49, Quinton Twp. where friends may call. A visitation will also be held at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Salem County Veteran's Cemetery, Pilesgrove.
