Opera singer. In the late 19th century, she was the foremost contralto in America. She studied music and singing, graduating from Gorham Seminary in 1862. She continued her training in Europe, where she made her debut. She made her American debut in New York in 1870. Her astonishing range garnered her an international reputation. At the time she retired, 1879, she was one of the most popular singers in America.
