Lucinda Coontz was born about 1840 in Missouri, daughter of Malona (née Morgan) and ----- Coontz (or Coots). It appears that her father died when she was young, and her mother Malona then married John Barb.

Lucinda Coontz married William T. Etherton about 1859 in Missouri. The couple were enumerated in 1860 and 1870 in Harrison County, Missouri (William was on active duty in Missouri militia units in 1862-63); moved to Iowa by the mid-1870s; and finally moved to Nebraska by 1883. According to the 1900 census, Lucinda had 11 children; 7 were living. Her children include—
