Lieutenant Colonel Sanders was born December 22, 1917 in Chattanooga, TN, becoming a Nashville resident at an early age.
A graduate of Hume Fogg High School and the University of Wisconsin, he entered active military service in 1938, serving initially in the U.S. Marine Corps, followed by entry into the flight training program of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Commissioned Second Lieutenant in 1940, Lt-Colonel Sanders served continuously with the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force until 1968. Principal assignments included that of Flight Instructor. Fighter-Bomber Pilot WWII, Squadron Commander, Group Operations Officer, Deputy Group Commander, Faculty Air Command and Staff School, Station Commander. Principal decorations include: Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, four Air Medals, three Air Force Commendation Medals, French Croix de Guerre with Etoile, French Croix de Guerre with Palm, French Fourragere, two Distingusihed Union Citations, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with eight Bronze Battle Stars.
Lt-Colonel Sanders was predeceased by his parents, Edward A. Sanders, Sr. and Lucy J. Sanders; three brothers, Timothy J. Sanders, Charles W. Sanders and James E. Sanders; one sister, Sarah N. Finger.
Survivors include two sons, one of AZ and one of AL
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
